Not JUST Pit Bulls
Recently someone asked why we saved only pit bulls. I thought about it for a while and realized, we don’t. Let me explain. Yes, we focus on bully breeds. We have had a long love affair with pit bulls and make no bones about it (heh heh). Our favorite dogs have been pitties and they continue to rank number one in our hearts. It doesn’t mean other dogs aren’t getting rescued because of our work.
As a general rule, we take dogs from shelters. Typically, they are rural, low resource, high kill shelters. Also, as a general rule, pit bull and pit bull type dogs get euthanized first. We go rescue a dog from a place with more chances of being killed and less chance of being adopted. Lucky us and lucky dog!
Now, think about that space that opened because we rescued that dog. That space is there for another dog that’s a stray or has been abandoned. It may or may not be a bully breed. However, that new space is available to save another animal. Some shelters are so low on space and funding, that even the removal of one dog means they don’t have to euthanize for space.
There are MANY rescues that focus on a specific breed. Each one has their reason and their passion. But don’t ever think the work they do means another dog is not being saved. They are. And honestly, dog people have resources to find other dog people. If a mutt showed up at our door, we wouldn’t put it back on the street. We would find the mutt rescue and get some help.
Please remember that all of the rescues and shelters are working on behalf of animals. If you find one that matches your passions and preferences, be sure to help them continue their work. If you are a mutt lover, there are shelters and senior animals that would love to have your support.
As always, thank you for your support. So many people have expressed their love and have offered support. Keep in mind, all of you who have said, “Let me know when you need me to come do ________”, the time is almost here. See you soon!
